Voilà WHEN I’M WITHOUT YOU, une chanson sur le non-amour agacé, mâtiné de haine – a song about annoyed lack of love, mixed with some stewed hate

Histoire de la chanson WHEN I’M WITHOUT YOU – story of the song :

C’est comme ça qu’est né le motif ascendant de WITHOUT YOU en janvier 2017 – I wanted to progress in the picking turn and return technique with my folk guitar. I am used to replacing often boring guitar methods exercises with improvisations of my own respecting the technical rule, that I find more melodious or more fun. That’s how was born the upward motive of WITHOUT YOU in January 2017.

I added lyrics, then a second musical phrase, then a third, then a last and a break.

I thought it would be easy for me to orchestrate it. But, I admit, I drooled during a big good week.

J’ai commencé par enregistrer une guitare rythmique, colonne vertébrale de toute la chanson – I started recording a rhythm guitar, the backbone of the whole song.

Et je doublerai le motif au violoncelle, voire à la contrebasse – I then recorded the pattern, which is played on two alternate notes, back and forth of course. And there I was confronted with my first surprise: the pattern played on the folk guitar on rhythmic folk guitar background was an auditory muddle, a sound soup. I thought, I’ll take the pattern on the piano Challen tack, which is very clear and precise. And I’ll double the cello pattern, even the double bass.

Alors j’ai abandonné l’emploi du violoncelle pour le motif – The choice of the piano was good, but oddly enough, playing the motive together on the piano and the folk guitar, the latter gave the auditory feeling of being a cello. So I gave up the use of the cello for the motive.

The acoustic bass and the resumption of the pattern on the bass being badly phased, I chose to remove the bass.

However, the song has a break that must be quite heavy and I there I used a rhythmic predone rock pattern.

I chose from five possible chorus types , a line of voice along with the second musical phrase of the piece. I also composed a cello melody line to support the 4th sentence.

Mais il a fallu réécrire la ligne mélodique en tenant compte de l’instrument – Patatras, the demanding jury to whom I submit the progress of the orchestration, made me understand that it was necessary to avoid languid instruments on this piece. Exit the cello, which I replaced with a solo trumpet. The instrument is more « ironic » and is indeed a thousand times better. But it was necessary to rewrite the melodic line taking into account the instrument.

La deuxième phrase doit être languissante et c’est (à mes yeux) pleinement réussi – The jury also suggested to me to pass choirs that do a little cream pie in the long run. I replaced with the cello. And finally, I was able to cast the cello because the result is good. The second sentence must be languid and it is (in my eyes) fully successful.

My jury also refused at least five times my voice recordings. I had to go back to basics, find the first recordings made in January 2017 to find the precise phrasing of this song, which I had transformed into less well, when I rewrote the texts. I made at least 30 catches to make the final recording. Still, I had to manipulate the track to catch a (small) time gap. I also spent a lot of time fiddling with sliders, bass limiters, to compensate for low frequency blistering, before understanding after several discouraging hours, that I simply had to sing at a greater distance from my microphone.

Pour donner davantage encore de tonus à ce break, j’ai ajouté des trompettes – My jury had encouraged me to give up my violent break , but I stood. I tried to insert a digital electric guitar track, which I wanted to complete with a recording of my own electric guitar. To give even more tone to this break, I added trumpets.

Cela m’a conduit à repenser l’ensemble de l’enregistrement vocal, désormais articulé autour d’une dualité –  To make more understandable this break that nothing announces, I added very vindictive words . The voice recording has been enhanced with a reverb effect to give more depth to the message . This led me to rethink the whole voice recording, now articulated around a duality:

  • Un chant tout en délicatesse qui dit combien il est bon d’être « without you » et que « please, honey, would you be so so kind as to leave me ». A delicate song that says how good it is to be « without you » and that « please, honey, you would be so kind to leave me ». The addition of a mandolin was needed for the third musical phrase.

Du piano désarticulé, dissonant, venant ajouter à l’idée d’effondrement libératoire ou d’explosion – I spent a whole evening repeating the electric guitar part to be recorded, refining that solo loop. Then I recorded. And when I listened, I realized that the addition of a second guitar not only did bring nothing, but also blurred the hearing. I went to bed very disappointed. But in the night, the solution appeared to me: a piano. Disarticulated, dissonant piano, adding to the idea of liberating collapse or explosion.

The next day, I worked on a piano part for the break. But I quickly realized that my limited technical mastery of keyboard did not allow me to elegantly play dissonances. So I composed a more classic line with some flats to say.
